Ploystyrene Insulation
Ploystyrene insulation is an aromatic polymer made from the aromatic monomer styrene, a liquid hydrocarbon that is commercially manufactured from oil. Polystyrene is a thermoplastic substance, normally existing in solid state at room temperature, but melting if heated, and becoming solid again when cooling off. Polystyrene insulation sheets are very easy to cut and are extremely light.
White polystyrene insulation sheets are often used in buildings and is also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS). Expanded polystyrene sheets are produced from a mixture of about 90-95% polystyrene and 5-10% gaseous blowing agent, most commonly carbon dioxide or pentane. The solid plastic is expanded into a foam through the use of heat, usually steam. It is a ideal insulation material and is often used for insulating walls, floors and roofs and more.
To measure up your loft to find out how much polystyrene sheeting you will need, clear the loft and place a few boards across the joists to give you a platform at you can measure from. Remember that the floor of the loft is the ceiling of the room below and you will go through it if you put any weight on it. It is also recommended that you wear suitable clothing and a mask for dust that will be in your loft.
Insulating your house can save you a lot of money over the year. Heat lost through wooden suspended ground floors can be as much as 10% and floor insulation can halve this. The easiest and most cost effective insulation you can do is your loft. By laying polystyrene insulation sheets in your loft you can save around 20% on your heating bill. Then there are the environmental aspects of insulating your home. Not only could you save between £130 - £380 but you will save a massive 1 ' 2.5 tonnes of CO2 from polluting our atmosphere.
